Nursery – Introduction to Dough Disco

This week the children experienced a ‘dough disco’ for the first time. We first heard about Dough Disco from a Shonette Bason-Wood training course. Each child is given a ball of play dough and then we dance along to music whilst squeezing, squashing, rolling and pinching the dough in time to the music. Not only is this a lot of fun and quite therapeutic, it’s also a great way for the children to build up strength and control in their hands and fingers which will help them with pencil control and writing and improves fine motor skills. It also starts the afternoon session with a big boost of energy!

Why not have your own dough discos at home ? You can buy play dough quite cheaply in a range of colours or make your own and then sing and dance along to your favourite songs whilst encouraging your child to squish and roll the dough ! There are plenty play dough recipes available on the internet and you can add essential oils(check for suitability for use with children) herbs, food colouring and spices to keep things interesting.
